Every year from September 15 to October 15, millions of Americans celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. It’s a great time of year to learn about what it means to be Hispanic and take time to recognize the achievements members in the Hispanic community have made in the US and the world. Here’s what you need to know about this important month:
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Americans with heritage from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. On September 17, 1968, President Johnson designated a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, President Reagan extended that week to a month-long observance.
Why is Hispanic Heritage Month split between two months?
There were significant victories observed within the months of September and October for the Hispanic/Latino communities. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their independence on September 15, Mexico on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
Hispanics in the U.S. Military:
Hispanic and Latino soldiers have served and sacrificed their lives in every American war, both domestic and abroad. According to the DoD demographic data for 2022, over 8% of DoD civilian employees indicate Hispanic ethnicity and approximately 19% of active duty personnel identify as Hispanic or Latino.
